Person of the day
Three names from three eras sharing one small number
Mother of Dan and Naphtali. Her children entered the twelve, and the Torah makes no distinction in the count.
A second-century tanna. Tradition holds that he hid in a cave with his son for thirteen years from the Romans.
He changed his manner again and again and left some twenty thousand works. He painted Guernica in five weeks.
What connects them
History ties all three to a home, a family or a community: their work is measured by what was left to the people around them.
Six is the six days of work, after which there is something to stop for. A day of home, of family, of what is done for others. Mend something, set the table, make the call.
Who near you today needs not an opinion but simply your presence?
How the small number works: the digits are added until one remains. Non-Hebrew names are written in Hebrew letters by ordinary transliteration; variants exist, and the number depends on the spelling. We show the letters so it can be checked. This is a coincidence of counting, not a claim about fate. It is interesting exactly insofar as you can see how it was counted.

A Torah word with this number
This happens more often than the meeting does: measured, the number of the week and the number of the date meet on roughly one day in three. Saying so plainly is the method.
Remembered today
Tradition places his death on Shavuot. The book of Psalms is ascribed to him — the same book divided across the thirty days of the month and read daily the world over.
Israel ben Eliezer, 1698–1760. Founder of Hasidism. He taught that a simple person praying from the heart stands no lower than a scholar, and that joy is not the reward for service but the manner of it.
Psalms of the day
Under the customary division of the book of Psalms across the thirty days of the month, today's reading is 35-38.

Reading of the reduced number
Six is the six days of work, after which there is something to stop for. A day of home, of family, of what is done for others. Mend something, set the table, make the call.
What follows is an interpretation, not a calculation. The reduced number comes from adding the digits; everything else on this page can be checked, and this cannot.
