The Amorite king who refused peaceful passage. The Torah stresses: words of peace were sent first, and only then war.
Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen Kook, 1865–1935, first Ashkenazi chief rabbi of the Land of Israel. He wrote about the secular pioneers of his day with a warmth almost nobody in his own camp shared.
Israel's first prime minister, who declared the state in 1948. He spent his last years in the desert, at kibbutz Sde Boker.
