Why the spelling matters more than it seems

Ashkenazim do not name a child after a living person — the name is given in memory of someone who has died. Sephardim name after the living too. If you are naming in someone's honour, what matters is how that person wrote the name themselves: one letter changes the number, and with it the page of the Torah and the verse. We show both spellings and the gap between them.

What is not here

We do not say how the child will turn out. A name is not a character.
