1910–1995, Jerusalem. He worked out halakhah for a world of electricity, hospitals and transplants — calmly, and without fear of the new.
He began going deaf at thirty and wrote the Ninth Symphony without hearing it. At the premiere he had to be turned round to see the ovation.
