«And when they were gone out of the city, and were not yet far off, Joseph said unto his steward: 'Up, follow after the men; and when thou dost overtake them, say unto them: Wherefore have ye rewarded evil for good?»
Bereshit (Genesis) 44:4 · page 79 of 354
This is from the portion “Miketz” (Genesis 41–44). What it is about: Pharaoh's dreams of seven cows and seven ears; Joseph rules Egypt; the brothers come for grain; the cup in Benjamin's sack.
Nobody picked it: the letters of today's date add up to 79, and that is page 79 of the 354 pages of the Torah — the first five books of the Bible.
A name from this week's portion gives exactly this number. Four days in a hundred.
The same number was already written down around 1300: אך נח = עוג
In the database it appears 7 times across 5 books. We do not claim this proves anything: we show who wrote it and when, and we recounted it ourselves.
Today is the name's day of: Boaz, Jose. And your name?
Person of the day
Three names from three eras sharing one small number
A prophet hired to curse, who opened his mouth and said 'how goodly are your tents, Jacob' — words with which the morning still begins.
1910–1995, Jerusalem. He worked out halakhah for a world of electricity, hospitals and transplants — calmly, and without fear of the new.
He published Leaves of Grass at his own expense and spent his life rewriting the same book, adding to it again and again.
What connects them
All three looked at what others did not see, and insisted on what they saw longer than was comfortable.
The seventh day is the one on which nothing is made. The number of completeness and of stopping. Today it suits better to look at what has been done than to add to it.
Where are you right but silent, because arguing costs more?
How the small number works: the digits are added until one remains. Non-Hebrew names are written in Hebrew letters by ordinary transliteration; variants exist, and the number depends on the spelling. We show the letters so it can be checked. This is a coincidence of counting, not a claim about fate. It is interesting exactly insofar as you can see how it was counted.

A Torah word with this number
This happens more often than the meeting does: measured, the number of the week and the number of the date meet on roughly one day in three. Saying so plainly is the method.
A name from this week's portion
The name equals the number of the day. This comes out on about four days in a hundred.
Psalms of the day
Under the customary division of the book of Psalms across the thirty days of the month, today's reading is 66-68.

Reading of the reduced number
The seventh day is the one on which nothing is made. The number of completeness and of stopping. Today it suits better to look at what has been done than to add to it.
What follows is an interpretation, not a calculation. The reduced number comes from adding the digits; everything else on this page can be checked, and this cannot.
