The number of the day
THE VERSE THE DATE CHOSE

וַיֹּאמֶר פַּרְעֹה אֶל־יַעֲקֹב כַּמָּה יְמֵי שְׁנֵי חַיֶּיךָ

«And Pharaoh said unto Jacob: 'How many are the days of the years of thy life?'»

Bereshit (Genesis) 47:8 · page 85 of 354

This is from the portion “Vayigash” (Genesis 44–47). What it is about: Judah pleads for Benjamin; Joseph reveals himself to his brothers; Jacob goes down to Egypt; the family settles in Goshen.

Nobody picked it: the letters of today's date add up to 85, and that is page 85 of the 354 pages of the Torah — the first five books of the Bible.

The word with this number is read this very week — and it is rare in the whole Torah.

A VOICE FROM THE PAST

The same number was already written down around 1300: נא ידך = מילה

In the database it appears 37 times across 18 books. We do not claim this proves anything: we show who wrote it and when, and we recounted it ourselves.

Today is the name's day of: Layla. And your name?

A known name
1928-2016
אלי ויזל= 94

He survived Auschwitz and Buchenwald, kept silent for ten years, then wrote Night. Nobel Peace Prize, 1986.

What connects them

Four sides, four walls. A day for sorting rather than designing: lay it out, finish it, make it firm. The foundation matters more than the facade today.

Question of the day

What in your life needs not a decision but simply one more day of work?

How the small number works: the digits are added until one remains. Non-Hebrew names are written in Hebrew letters by ordinary transliteration; variants exist, and the number depends on the spelling. We show the letters so it can be checked. This is a coincidence of counting, not a claim about fate. It is interesting exactly insofar as you can see how it was counted.

Psalms of the day

Under the customary division of the book of Psalms across the thirty days of the month, today's reading is 88-89.

What follows is an interpretation, not a calculation. The reduced number comes from adding the digits; everything else on this page can be checked, and this cannot.
