Three names from three eras sharing one small number
The third patriarch. He wrestled through the night and received a new name — Israel. Father of the twelve tribes.
Elijah ben Shlomo Zalman, 1720–1797. He held no rabbinic post and taught almost no students, yet Lithuanian Jewry has been shaped by his way of reading ever since: back to the plain text, with the manuscripts checked.
The sixteenth US president. He led the country through the civil war and signed the proclamation freeing the slaves.
