How a system answers only what it can show

VERIFIED CORE 861 · SPECIFICATION v0.1

SAPIR 861 was built to answer questions about Hebrew letters and classical sources without inventing anything. The part that made it work is not the subject matter: it is an architecture of five organs. We publish that architecture so it can be used in medicine, law, archives, industry or robotics — anywhere an answer has to be shown rather than sounded plausible.

The five organs

1. Counting

Deterministic computation, exposed step by step. The model does not compute.

  • The computing core is deterministic: the same input returns the same output, always.
  • Every step of the computation is exposed, so a person can repeat it by hand or in another implementation.
  • The language model never performs the computation itself.
2. Memory

Facts in an addressable store with origin and licence. Empty is an answer.

  • Facts live in an addressable store, separate from the model's weights.
  • Every fact carries its origin: source, author or issuer, date, licence.
  • An empty result is a valid answer and must be returned as such, never filled in by generation.
3. Falsification

Every finding comes with the chance of it happening at random, over the real search space.

  • Every claimed finding is reported together with how often it would occur by chance.
  • The size of the search space is counted and disclosed, and corrected for multiple comparisons.
  • A negative result is published on the same terms as a positive one.
4. Refusal

Refusal rules in code, machine-readable, about people, the future and missing sources.

  • Refusal rules live in the code, not in a prompt, and are machine-readable to the caller.
  • The rules name what the system will not say about a person, about the future, and about a source it does not have.
  • A caller can read the rules before it presents anything to a human.
5. Provenance

A hash and a reproducible call under every answer.

  • Every answer carries a record: a hash of its content and the exact call that reproduces it.
  • The record changes only when the input, the data or the engine version changes.
  • The engine version is part of the record.

Three levels of conformance

  1. Level 1 — the five organs, publicly reachable.
  2. Level 2 — plus a published evaluation and its results, negative ones included.
  3. Level 3 — plus a run on a held-out set the implementer has never seen.

Reference implementation

sapir861.com is the first implementation and the proof that the architecture holds on hard material: an unchanging corpus, 8,629 attestations from 834 classical works, an open benchmark, a published negative result about our own central number, and refusal rules any caller can read through the rules tool.

Terms, plainly

  • The text of this specification is published under CC BY-ND 4.0: read it, quote it, build on it — but a modified edition may not be issued under this name.
  • Implementing the architecture needs no permission and no licence from us. Ideas are not owned; being first and being verifiable is what we keep.
  • The engine, the extraction pipeline and the evidence base are not part of this publication. They are available as a service, or as a copy on your own servers by agreement.
  • Conformance at level 3 is confirmed by us on a held-out set that is in no download, because we never published it.
