Dov Ber, 1704–1772, successor of the Baal Shem Tov. He rarely left his room, but nearly every Hasidic dynasty of the next century traces itself back to the students he sent out from it.
A philosopher excommunicated by the Amsterdam community at twenty-three. He earned his living grinding lenses and turned down a chair to stay independent.
