The number of your name

The number of your name is 616. The Torah word יתרו — “Jethro, father-in-law of Moses” — has the same.

Your word in the Torah

The word יתרו — “Jethro, father-in-law of Moses” — has the same number as your name. Here is the verse where it first appears:

ומשה היה רעה את צאן יתרו חתנו כהן מדין וינהג את הצאן אחר המדבר ויבא אל הר האלהים חרבה
Exodus 3:1

The verse of your name

There is a sentence with which, by custom, a person answers when asked who they are.

Yours is this one.

על כן אהבתי מצותיך מזהב ומפז
Psalms 119:127

The verse is chosen by the custom: it begins with the first letter of your name, ע, and ends with the last, ז.

The Pentateuch has no verse that begins with ע and ends with ז. The custom allows the whole Tanakh — and there it is: Psalms 119:127.

The custom is written down in the Kitzur Shelah and in Sefer Ben Zion: “say it regularly and never forget it as long as you live.” The Rokeach gives the reason in Chochmat ha-Nefesh: a person is asked their name, and whoever does not remember cannot answer. The verse holds the name for them. Siddur ha-Rashban puts it more plainly: children were made to learn their verse by heart — so that if they were taken and forgot everything else, they would still know who they were.

How to read your number

Fact. The letters of the name עמפרטריז add up to 616. Plain addition — you can check it yourself.

Meaning. There is a Torah word with the same number — יתרו (“Jethro, father-in-law of Moses”). A matching sum does not mean the word is 'about you'; it is a reason to look at what in it matters to you.

Story. יתרו — this name has the same sum, 616. 'And Jethro heard' — what did he hear? The Sages differ: about the splitting sea, or the war with Amalek. He heard — and came. (Zevachim 116a)

A question for yourself. What in this do you recognise in yourself — and what would you like to strengthen?

Practice. This week: open the verse of your name, read it slowly three times and write down one thought that stays with you.

עמפרטריז
In short
Your name in Hebrew letters is עמפרטריז. Adding up the numbers of its letters gives 616 — the same as the Torah word יתרו, “Jethro, father-in-law of Moses”. What that portion is about: The red heifer; Miriam's death; water from the rock and the striking with the staff; Aaron's death; the bronze serpent. The verse that begins with the first letter of your name and ends with the last is Psalms 119:127. Each of these steps is laid out below with its sources. Every figure can be checked by hand.

The verse this place falls on is Bamidbar (Numbers) 21:26:
כִּי חֶשְׁבּוֹן עִיר סִיחֹן מֶלֶךְ הָאֱמֹרִי הִוא וְהוּא נִלְחַם בְּמֶלֶךְ מוֹאָב הָרִאשׁוֹן וַיִּקַּח אֶת־כָּל־אַרְצוֹ מִיָּדוֹ עַד־אַרְנֹן
For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even unto the Arnon.
This is from the portion Chukat. What it is about: The red heifer; Miriam's death; water from the rock and the striking with the staff; Aaron's death; the bronze serpent.
The same number, 616, is given by these Tanakh names:
Jethro יתרו

The tradition counts the same name in several ways. The main one is above: each letter is its number. The other eight are old and checkable too; each gives its own number, and many of them have a Torah word with the same number.
Final letters as 500–900 (mispar gadol) — 616. A Torah word with the same number is יתרו — “Jethro, father-in-law of Moses” (Exodus 3:1).
Reduced, each letter to one digit (mispar katan) — 40. A Torah word with the same number is חלב — “fat” (Genesis 4:4).

The letters that come out are זיוגנגמע — not a word that stands in the Pentateuch. Atbash: letters mirrored, alef for tav, bet for shin, and the number of the resulting word — 189. A Torah word with the same number is פקדה — “oversight, visitation” (Numbers 3:32).
Filling: the names of the letters are counted — alef, bet, gimel… (milui) — 1817.
