The number of your name

Felix (פליקס) — From Latin felix, “happy, fruitful”.
And the same number belongs to the Torah word עיר — “city”.

Your word in the Torah

The word עיר — “city” — has the same number as your name. Here is the verse where it first appears:

וידע קין את אשתו ותהר ותלד את חנוך ויהי בנה עיר ויקרא שם העיר כשם בנו חנוך
Genesis 4:17

The verse of your name

There is a sentence with which, by custom, a person answers when asked who they are.

Yours is this one.

פלס ומאזני משפט לה׳ מעשהו כל אבני כיס
Proverbs 16:11

The verse is chosen by the custom: it begins with the first letter of your name, פ, and ends with the last, ס.

The Pentateuch has no verse that begins with פ and ends with ס. The custom allows the whole Tanakh — and there it is: Proverbs 16:11.

The custom is written down in the Kitzur Shelah and in Sefer Ben Zion: “say it regularly and never forget it as long as you live.” The Rokeach gives the reason in Chochmat ha-Nefesh: a person is asked their name, and whoever does not remember cannot answer. The verse holds the name for them. Siddur ha-Rashban puts it more plainly: children were made to learn their verse by heart — so that if they were taken and forgot everything else, they would still know who they were.

How to read your number

Fact. The letters of the name פליקס add up to 280. Plain addition — you can check it yourself.

Meaning. There is a Torah word with the same number — עיר (“city”). A matching sum does not mean the word is 'about you'; it is a reason to look at what in it matters to you.

A question for yourself. What in this do you recognise in yourself — and what would you like to strengthen?

Practice. This week: open the verse of your name, read it slowly three times and write down one thought that stays with you.

In short
Your name in Hebrew letters is פליקס. From Latin felix, “happy, fruitful”. In ancient Rome it was first a nickname and later became a personal name. In Hebrew it is written by sound. Adding up the numbers of its letters gives 280 — the same as the Torah word עיר, “city”. That number points to Torah page 280 of 354 — in the portion Matot. What that portion is about: Vows and their annulment; the war with Midian; the tribes of Reuben and Gad ask for land beyond the Jordan. The verse that begins with the first letter of your name and ends with the last is Proverbs 16:11. Each of these steps is laid out below with its sources. Every figure can be checked by hand.
You wrote “Felix” — this exact spelling is what was calculated: פליקס. The customary Hebrew spelling of this name. If your name is spelled differently, correct the Hebrew spelling and the report is recomputed.
Adding up the letters of the name פליקס gives 280.

✓ Verify

This number is shared with 7 other name(s) out of the 2,980 in the index.

Two hundred and eighty is the sum of the five final letters (ך ם ן ף ץ) in the ordinary count.
The number 280, as the remainder modulo 354, points to Torah page 280 in the book of Bamidbar (Numbers).
The verse this place falls on is Bamidbar (Numbers) 31:18:
וְכֹל הַטַּף בַּנָּשִׁים אֲשֶׁר לֹא־יָדְעוּ מִשְׁכַּב זָכָר הַחֲיוּ לָכֶם
But all the women children, that have not known man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.
This is from the portion Matot. What it is about: Vows and their annulment; the war with Midian; the tribes of Reuben and Gad ask for land beyond the Jordan.
Other ways of counting
The tradition counts the same name in several ways. The main one is above: each letter is its number. The other eight are old and checkable too; each gives its own number, and many of them have a Torah word with the same number.
Final letters as 500–900 (mispar gadol) — 280. A Torah word with the same number is עיר — “city” (Genesis 4:17).
Reduced, each letter to one digit (mispar katan) — 19. A Torah word with the same number is גוי — “nation” (Genesis 10:5).
Ordinal: alef 1, bet 2 … tav 22 (mispar siduri) — 73. A Torah word with the same number is גמל — “camel” (Genesis 12:16).
Cumulative: a letter plus all letters before it (mispar kidmi) — 1415.
Squares of the letter values (mispar perati) — 21000.
Building: the sum grows with each letter (mispar bone’eh) — 810. A Torah word with the same number is יתת — “Jetheth, chief of Edom” (Genesis 36:40).
The letters that come out are וכמדח — not a word that stands in the Pentateuch. Atbash: letters mirrored, alef for tav, bet for shin, and the number of the resulting word — 78. A Torah word with the same number is לחם — “bread, food” (Genesis 3:19).
Filling: the names of the letters are counted — alef, bet, gimel… (milui) — 481. A Torah word with the same number is טבעת — “ring, signet ring” (Genesis 41:42).
The number 280 appears in the classical books 57 times across 26 works. The earliest mention is ספר קרניים (~1400).
The name פליקס does not stand as a word in the Pentateuch — as with most names, including many Tanakh names from the later books.
The verse of your name
The Pentateuch has no verse that begins with פ and ends with ס. The custom allows the whole Tanakh — the Prophets and the Writings have 2 such verses. The first of them is Proverbs 16:11:
פלס ומאזני משפט לה׳ מעשהו כל אבני כיס

How it is counted

Each Hebrew letter has a number; a word's number is their sum (alef 1 … tav 400). The page is the remainder modulo 354: the Torah divided into 354 pages of 861 letters, as the lunar year has 354 days. Everything can be checked by hand.
