The number of your name

Sally (סלי) stands in the Torah as a word of its own — 1 time. First in Genesis 40:16.

Sally (סלי) — In Hebrew letters the name is spelled like the Tanakh name Sallu: the name of two Israelites (Numbers 25:14).
And the same number belongs to the Torah word על — “on, over”.

Your word in the Torah

The word על — “on, over” — has the same number as your name. Here is the verse where it first appears:

והארץ היתה תהו ובהו וחשך על פני תהום ורוח אלהים מרחפת על פני המים
Genesis 1:2

The verse of your name

There is a sentence with which, by custom, a person answers when asked who they are.

Yours is this one.

סורו ממני כל פעלי און כי שמע ה׳ קול בכיי
Psalms 6:9

The verse is chosen by the custom: it begins with the first letter of your name, ס, and ends with the last, י.

The Pentateuch has no verse that begins with ס and ends with י. The custom allows the whole Tanakh — and there it is: Psalms 6:9.

The custom is written down in the Kitzur Shelah and in Sefer Ben Zion: “say it regularly and never forget it as long as you live.” The Rokeach gives the reason in Chochmat ha-Nefesh: a person is asked their name, and whoever does not remember cannot answer. The verse holds the name for them. Siddur ha-Rashban puts it more plainly: children were made to learn their verse by heart — so that if they were taken and forgot everything else, they would still know who they were.

How to read your number

Fact. The letters of the name סלי add up to 100. Plain addition — you can check it yourself.

Meaning. There is a Torah word with the same number — על (“on, over”). A matching sum does not mean the word is 'about you'; it is a reason to look at what in it matters to you.

Story. מיכל — this name has the same sum, 100. The Sages relate that Michal, daughter of Saul, wore tefillin. (Eruvin 96a)

A question for yourself. What in this do you recognise in yourself — and what would you like to strengthen?

Practice. This week: open the verse of your name, read it slowly three times and write down one thought that stays with you.

סלי
In short
Your name in Hebrew letters is סלי. In Hebrew letters the name is spelled like the Tanakh name Sallu: the name of two Israelites (Numbers 25:14). This is a shared spelling, not the origin of the name. Meaning, per Strong’s dictionary (1890): “weighed”. Adding up the numbers of its letters gives 100 — the same as the Torah word על, “on, over”. That number points to Torah page 100 of 354 — in the portion Vaera. What that portion is about: “And I appeared”: the promise of redemption in four expressions; the first seven plagues, from blood to hail. The verse that begins with the first letter of your name and ends with the last is Psalms 6:9. Each of these steps is laid out below with its sources. Every figure can be checked by hand.
You wrote “Sally” — this exact spelling is what was calculated: סלי. Spelled by the Academy of the Hebrew Language rules for foreign names. If your name is spelled differently, correct the Hebrew spelling and the report is recomputed.
Adding up the letters of the name סלי gives 100.

The number 100 is the Torah word על — «on, over» (Genesis 1:2).

This number is shared with 11 other name(s) out of the 2,980 in the index.

Abraham's hundred years at Isaac's birth (Genesis 21:5); a hundred blessings a day (Talmud, Menachot 43b); qof is 100.
The number 100, as the remainder modulo 354, points to Torah page 100 in the book of Shmot (Exodus).
The verse this place falls on is Shmot (Exodus) 6:8:
וְהֵבֵאתִי אֶתְכֶם אֶל־הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר נָשָׂאתִי אֶת־יָדִי לָתֵת אֹתָהּ לְאַבְרָהָם לְיִצְחָק וּלְיַעֲקֹב וְנָתַתִּי אֹתָהּ לָכֶם מוֹרָשָׁה אֲנִי ה׳
And I will bring you in unto the land, concerning which I lifted up My hand to give it to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it you for a heritage: I am HaShem.'
This is from the portion Vaera. What it is about: “And I appeared”: the promise of redemption in four expressions; the first seven plagues, from blood to hail.
The same number, 100, is given by these Tanakh names:
Michal מיכל
Other ways of counting
The tradition counts the same name in several ways. The main one is above: each letter is its number. The other eight are old and checkable too; each gives its own number, and many of them have a Torah word with the same number.
Final letters as 500–900 (mispar gadol) — 100. A Torah word with the same number is על — “on, over” (Genesis 1:2).
Reduced, each letter to one digit (mispar katan) — 10. A Torah word with the same number is בדד — “alone” (Numbers 23:9).
Ordinal: alef 1, bet 2 … tav 22 (mispar siduri) — 37. A Torah word with the same number is גדל — “to grow, be great” (Genesis 12:2).
Cumulative: a letter plus all letters before it (mispar kidmi) — 415. A Torah word with the same number is מעשה — “work, deed” (Genesis 5:29).
Squares of the letter values (mispar perati) — 4600.
Building: the sum grows with each letter (mispar bone’eh) — 250.
The letters that come out are חכמ — not a word that stands in the Pentateuch. Atbash: letters mirrored, alef for tav, bet for shin, and the number of the resulting word — 68. A Torah word with the same number is חלל — “to begin” (Genesis 4:26).
Filling: the names of the letters are counted — alef, bet, gimel… (milui) — 214. A Torah word with the same number is ירד — “to go down” (Genesis 11:5).
The number 100 appears in the classical books 83 times across 54 works. The earliest mention is פירוש קדמון על ספר חסידים (~1200).
The name סלי appears in the Torah as a word 1 time. The first time is Genesis 40:16.
The verse of your name
The Pentateuch has no verse that begins with ס and ends with י. The custom allows the whole Tanakh — the Prophets and the Writings have 10 such verses. The first of them is Psalms 6:9:
סורו ממני כל פעלי און כי שמע ה׳ קול בכיי

Every date has a number too. Once a year it will match the number of your name — 100. The channel posts one number a day, one verse and the Torah page it lands on. Nothing after it, no mailing list.
Your name's day

The name סלי has no such day. The numbers of the dates in a year cover 326 values out of 940, and 100 is not among them. Half of all names are like this — neither good nor bad, just a fact of counting.

How it is counted

Each Hebrew letter has a number; a word's number is their sum (alef 1 … tav 400). The page is the remainder modulo 354: the Torah divided into 354 pages of 861 letters, as the lunar year has 354 days. Everything can be checked by hand.
