The number of your name

Sidoine (סידואן) — The name comes from Latin “Sidonius”, “from Sidon”, an old Phoenician city in today's Lebanon.
And the same number belongs to the Torah word מצא — “to find”.

Your word in the Torah

The word מצא — “to find” — has the same number as your name. Here is the verse where it first appears:

ויקרא האדם שמות לכל הבהמה ולעוף השמים ולכל חית השדה ולאדם לא מצא עזר כנגדו
Genesis 2:20

The verse of your name

There is a sentence with which, by custom, a person answers when asked who they are.

Yours is this one.

סיחון מלך האמרי היושב בחשבון משל מערוער אשר על שפת נחל ארנון ותוך הנחל וחצי הגלעד ועד יבק הנחל גבול בני עמון
Joshua 12:2

The verse is chosen by the custom: it begins with the first letter of your name, ס, and ends with the last, נ.

The Pentateuch has no verse that begins with ס and ends with נ. The custom allows the whole Tanakh — and there it is: Joshua 12:2.

The custom is written down in the Kitzur Shelah and in Sefer Ben Zion: “say it regularly and never forget it as long as you live.” The Rokeach gives the reason in Chochmat ha-Nefesh: a person is asked their name, and whoever does not remember cannot answer. The verse holds the name for them. Siddur ha-Rashban puts it more plainly: children were made to learn their verse by heart — so that if they were taken and forgot everything else, they would still know who they were.

How to read your number

Fact. The letters of the name סידואן add up to 131. Plain addition — you can check it yourself.

Meaning. There is a Torah word with the same number — מצא (“to find”). A matching sum does not mean the word is 'about you'; it is a reason to look at what in it matters to you.

A question for yourself. What in this do you recognise in yourself — and what would you like to strengthen?

Practice. This week: open the verse of your name, read it slowly three times and write down one thought that stays with you.

סידואן
In short
Your name in Hebrew letters is סידואן. The name comes from Latin “Sidonius”, “from Sidon”, an old Phoenician city in today's Lebanon. Sidonius Apollinaris was a Gallo-Roman poet of the 5th century. This form of the name is used in France. In Hebrew it is written by sound. Adding up the numbers of its letters gives 131 — the same as the Torah word מצא, “to find”. That number points to Torah page 131 of 354 — in the portion Mishpatim. What that portion is about: Laws of the servant, damages, theft and pledges; “an eye for an eye” as compensation; the sabbatical year; “we will do and we will hear”. The verse that begins with the first letter of your name and ends with the last is Joshua 12:2. Each of these steps is laid out below with its sources. Every figure can be checked by hand.
You wrote “Sidoine” — this exact spelling is what was calculated: סידואן. Spelled by the Academy of the Hebrew Language rules for foreign names. If your name is spelled differently, correct the Hebrew spelling and the report is recomputed.
Adding up the letters of the name סידואן gives 131.
131
The number 131 is the Torah word מצא — «to find» (Genesis 2:20).

This number is shared with 13 other name(s) out of the 2,980 in the index.

The number 131, as the remainder modulo 354, points to Torah page 131 in the book of Shmot (Exodus).
The verse this place falls on is Shmot (Exodus) 23:23:
כִּי־יֵלֵךְ מַלְאָכִי לְפָנֶיךָ וֶהֱבִיאֲךָ אֶל־הָאֱמֹרִי וְהַחִתִּי וְהַפְּרִזִּי וְהַכְּנַעֲנִי הַחִוִּי וְהַיְבוּסִי וְהִכְחַדְתִּיו
For Mine angel shall go before thee, and bring thee in unto the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Canaanite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; and I will cut them off.
This is from the portion Mishpatim. What it is about: Laws of the servant, damages, theft and pledges; “an eye for an eye” as compensation; the sabbatical year; “we will do and we will hear”.
Other ways of counting
The tradition counts the same name in several ways. The main one is above: each letter is its number. The other eight are old and checkable too; each gives its own number, and many of them have a Torah word with the same number.
Final letters as 500–900 (mispar gadol) — 781. A Torah word with the same number is ממשאת — “than the portions of” (Genesis 43:34).
Reduced, each letter to one digit (mispar katan) — 23.
Ordinal: alef 1, bet 2 … tav 22 (mispar siduri) — 50. A Torah word with the same number is כל — “all, every” (Genesis 1:21).
Cumulative: a letter plus all letters before it (mispar kidmi) — 537. A Torah word with the same number is מטבעתיו — “by its rings” (Exodus 28:28).
Squares of the letter values (mispar perati) — 6253.
Building: the sum grows with each letter (mispar bone’eh) — 496. A Torah word with the same number is צרור — “bundle, pouch” (Genesis 42:35).
The letters that come out are חמקפתט — not a word that stands in the Pentateuch. Atbash: letters mirrored, alef for tav, bet for shin, and the number of the resulting word — 637. A Torah word with the same number is לראות — “to see” (Genesis 2:19).
Filling: the names of the letters are counted — alef, bet, gimel… (milui) — 803. A Torah word with the same number is באתת — “with the banners” (Numbers 2:2).
The number 131 appears in the classical books 27 times across 18 works. The earliest mention is ספר קרניים (~1400).
The name סידואן does not stand as a word in the Pentateuch — as with most names, including many Tanakh names from the later books.
The verse of your name
The Pentateuch has no verse that begins with ס and ends with נ. The custom allows the whole Tanakh — the Prophets and the Writings have 2 such verses. The first of them is Joshua 12:2:
סיחון מלך האמרי היושב בחשבון משל מערוער אשר על שפת נחל ארנון ותוך הנחל וחצי הגלעד ועד יבק הנחל גבול בני עמון

How it is counted

Each Hebrew letter has a number; a word's number is their sum (alef 1 … tav 400). The page is the remainder modulo 354: the Torah divided into 354 pages of 861 letters, as the lunar year has 354 days. Everything can be checked by hand.
