The only one the Torah calls righteous in his generation. He built the ark for a hundred and twenty years and planted a vineyard.
1809–1883, founder of the Musar movement. He held that character is worked on like any other subject — by daily study, out loud, at a fixed hour — and not left to good intentions.
He lost the use of a hand in a sea battle and spent five years captive in Algiers. He wrote Don Quixote in his late fifties.
