The number 18: חי — and what is actually written about it
The best-known “Jewish number” — and just 24 attestations in the sources. The Torah words that come to 18, and why the habit of giving in multiples of 18 is older than any of those books.
What the database says
18 is named 36 times in 24 works: 25 exact matches, 11 with im hakolel. The earliest attestation is Sefer Karnayim, around 1400. For comparison, 86 has 155 mentions. So everyone knows 18, but little is written about it: fame and textual grounding are different things.
Torah words that come to 18
In the text of the Torah, 13 different words carry the value 18. The famous one is חי, “alive”: 24 occurrences, first at Genesis 3:20. But the same value holds האחד (64 times, Genesis 2:11), והוא (54 times, Genesis 3:16), חטא, “sin” (28 times, Exodus 32:31), אביה (19 times, Genesis 19:33). One value, several words — and not all of them about life.
Where the custom comes from
The custom of giving in multiples of 18 does not rest on these works but on the word חי itself and on living community practice. It is fairer to say so plainly: this is not a conclusion drawn from sources but a tradition standing on an obvious letter coincidence and living on its own. The two do not conflict — but they are different grounds.
18 on a Torah page
In the “Chumash 354” count, 18 falls on page eighteen, which opens in the book of Genesis. That is how the scroll is built: every number from 1 to 354 lands on exactly one page, and then the count repeats. It states nothing about a person.
