Person of the day
Three names from three eras sharing one small number
Father of Dathan and Abiram. The Torah names him only to show which household the revolt came from.
Shneur Zalman of Liadi, 1745–1812, author of the Tanya and of his own Shulchan Aruch. He built a teaching in which feeling is derived from thought rather than the reverse — hence the name Chabad, from three words: wisdom, understanding, knowledge.
He led Britain through the hardest year of the war. His Nobel Prize was not in politics but in literature.
What connects them
Each of the three dealt with power or great force — their own or someone else's — and had to decide what to do with it.
Eight comes after seven — that is, after completeness. The number of what goes past the ordinary measure. A day to check whether the work has outgrown its frame.
Where do you have more influence today than you admit to yourself?
How the small number works: the digits are added until one remains. Non-Hebrew names are written in Hebrew letters by ordinary transliteration; variants exist, and the number depends on the spelling. We show the letters so it can be checked. This is a coincidence of counting, not a claim about fate. It is interesting exactly insofar as you can see how it was counted.

What follows is an interpretation, not a calculation. The reduced number comes from adding the digits; everything else on this page can be checked, and this cannot.
