SAPIR 861 engine specification
Exactly how the site calculates. Everything needed to reproduce any of our answers on paper or in your own code and get the same number. Engine version 15.63, Torah text — OSHB WLC (CC BY 4.0), method mispar_hechrachi.
1. Letter values
א 1 · ב 2 · ג 3 · ד 4 · ה 5 · ו 6 · ז 7 · ח 8 · ט 9 · י 10 · כ 20 · ל 30 · מ 40 · נ 50 · ס 60 · ע 70 · פ 80 · צ 90 · ק 100 · ר 200 · ש 300 · ת 400. Final forms take the value of the ordinary letter: ך 20, ם 40, ן 50, ף 80, ץ 90. The 500–900 count (mispar gadol) is not part of the main number — it is given as a separate method and is never mixed into the main answer.
2. What is discarded before counting
Vowel points and cantillation marks are removed: בְּרֵאשִׁית and בראשית give one and the same result — 913. Spaces, punctuation, Latin and Cyrillic characters are not counted. Only the 22 consonant letters carry value. In output the Tetragrammaton is replaced by ה׳ and in this form is not summed as a name.
3. Torah page
The Pentateuch is divided into 354 pages of 861 letters according to the Chumash 354 edition (Binyamin Pichkhadze, Bnei Brak, 2002 / התשס״ג). The page of a number: page = (value mod 354), and if the remainder is 0 the page is 354. Check: 861 → 153, 354 → 354, 708 → 354, 355 → 1. The letter count on a page is always given with a ±1 qualification (im ha-kolel), never as an exact equality.
4. Nine methods of counting
Every analysis computes nine methods: ordinary (hechrachi), with finals 500–900 (gadol), reduced to a single digit (katan), ordinal (siduri), cumulative (kidmi), squares of the letters (perati), building (boneh), atbash with the resulting word, filling with the letter names (milui). The site's main number is always the first method; the rest are labelled with their own names.
5. A name not written in Hebrew
A name in Latin or Cyrillic script is resolved in three steps, and which step worked is visible in the spelling field of the API response. Step 1: an exact match in the verified index (2 980 names, 3 880 search keys) — mode bib if it is a name from the Tanakh, otherwise std. Step 2: the nearest verified name by Damerau–Levenshtein distance (limit 1 for names shorter than 7 characters, otherwise 2) — mode near, and the person is told directly, «we read this name as …». Step 3: transliteration rules by language — mode lat or cyr. The family name takes no part: only the letters of the given name are counted.
6. A Torah word with the same number
For 848 of the 861 numbers the Pentateuch has a word with the same sum; for 13 numbers no word exists at all. Of those 848, 846 are shown beside a person's name: for the remaining two (183 and 579) every form speaks of being struck down, and we do not place them there. Since version 12.17 up to three forms with the same sum are shown — the most frequent, with occurrence counts and first position in the text — alongside how many forms carry that sum in the Pentateuch at all (12,845 distinct word-forms in total). Forms of heavy meaning are excluded at build time using Strong's dictionary (public domain): 619 forms are never placed next to a living person's name. That is a decision about decency, not arithmetic, and it is stated here so that anyone repeating our count understands why they may obtain a word we do not show. When a number has no word at all, the site says so plainly instead of picking something similar. The words are taken from OSHB WLC (CC BY 4.0) with Strong's dictionary (public domain).
7. How to reproduce our answer
Any number is checked with a single request: GET https://sapir861.com/api/gematria?n=<Hebrew> — it returns the letters, the value of each, the sum and three signature fields: engine_version, corpus_version, method. Full analysis of a name: GET https://sapir861.com/api/name/<name>. Two expressions are equal by our arithmetic if and only if this request gives them the same value.
8. What the engine does not do
It does not evaluate people, does not rank names and numbers, does not promise events, does not divide days into good and bad, does not store profiles. A matching number is not a proof: by our own measurement, a word with any given number from 1 to 1000 is found in about 99,8 % of cases. What matters, therefore, is not the fact of the match itself but who recorded the equality and when — this is exactly why the evidence base exists.
